Can colored vinyl films be clear coated to provide additional protection? FDC colored vinyl films are designed to be used as standalone graphics, not requiring clear coats to meet their expected outdoor durability. As standalone graphics, FDC does not supply, recommend or test any clear coats with its products. There have been applications where FDC's films have been successfully clear coated. There are many options for clear coats and the nature of these products can provide protection from UV exposure, chemicals and abrasion. It is recommend that you first test any clear coat prior to use to ensure that no chemicals in the coating will damage the film or the adhesive. Building a clear coat in thin layers and allowing time for each layer to dry and cure is normally the best method. Higher quality cast vinyl films may perform better than calendered vinyl films when coated due to their greater resistance to shrink and curl over time.
